Hair Transplant like Wayne Rooney Hair Transplantation Cost
Hair transplant has recently been in the news due to Wayne Rooney going under the surgeons knife for a Hair transplant, with fantastic results even better results will be visible in around 6 to 12 months time. A recent article written in the Telegraph stated that he had paid a whopping £30,000 for this procedure???

This amount of hair loss needs 3,000 or more* grafts
Here at the Belvedere Private Hospital the cost for hair transplantation for one session of 3,000 grafts using a technique called strip harvesting (Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation) - COSTS £5,500
Please see our website for information on Our hair transplantation procedure
Strip harvesting is the most common technique for removing hair and follicles from a donor site, most commonly the area at the back and sides of the scalp. A single-, double-, or triple-bladed scalpel is used to remove strips of hair-bearing tissue from the donor site. Each incision is planned so that intact hair follicles are removed. Once removed, the strip is dissected into follicular units, which are small, naturally formed groupings of hair follicles.
Here are the main advantages of Strip Harvesting (Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation):

- The strip is still the gold standard for getting hair grafts. In the right hands very little hair is wasted because the roots of the FUs are visualized under the microscope. “Perfect” grafts can be trimmed to size.
- The strip has been around for more than ten years and large numbers of grafts can be reliably harvested and planted with a high degree of success.
- The strip is still the most time efficient and cost efficient way to harvest grafts.
- You must assume that you will heal with a scar and that you may not be able to wear your hair below a certain length. One to two on a clipper is reasonable.
- Future surgeries can be planned to remove the old scar so that the patient heals with only one scar.
- The healing time means one to two days of taking prescription pain pills and then most patients do well without prescription medications.
Procedure
Pre Surgery : At an initial consultation with our Hair Transplant surgeon analyzes the patient’s scalp, discusses his preferences and expectations, and advises him/her on the best approach (e.g. single vs. multiple sessions) and what results might reasonably be expected. For several days prior to surgery the patient refrains from using any medicines which might result in intraoperative bleeding and resultant poor “take” of the grafts. Alcohol and smoking can contribute to poor graft survival. Post operative antibiotics are commonly prescribed to prevent wound or graft infections.
Surgery: Hair Transplant operations are performed on an outpatient basis, with mild sedation (optional) and injected local anesthesia, which typically last about six hours. The scalp is shampooed and then treated with an antibacterial agent prior to the donor scalp being harvested.

In the usual follicular unit procedure, the surgeon harvests a strip of skin from the posterior scalp, in an area of good hair growth. The excised strip is about 1–1.5 x 15–30 cm in size. While closing the resulting wound, assistants begin to dissect individual follicular unit grafts from the strip. Working with binocular Stereo-microscopes, they carefully remove excess fibrous and fatty tissue while trying to avoid damage to the follicular cells that will be used for grafting. The latest method of closure is called ‘Trichophytic closure’ which results in much finer scars at the donor area.
Post-operative care: Advances in wound care allow for semi-permeable dressings, which allow seepage of blood and tissue fluid, to be applied and changed at least daily. The vulnerable recipient area must be shielded from the sun, and shampooing is started two days after the surgery. Some surgeons will have the patient shampoo the day after surgery. Shampooing is important to prevent scabs from occurring around the hair shaft. Scabs adhere to the hair shaft and increase the risk of losing newly transplanted hair follicles during the first 7 to 10 days post-op.
During the first ten days, virtually all of the transplanted hairs, inevitably traumatized by their relocation, will fall out (“shock loss”). After two to three months new hair will begin to grow from the moved follicles. The patient’s hair will grow normally, and continue to thicken through the next six to nine months. Any subsequent hair loss is likely to be only from untreated areas. Some patients elect to use medications to retard such loss, while others plan a subsequent transplant procedure to deal with this eventuality.
Side effects After Hair Transplantation: Hair thinning, known as “shock loss”, is a common side effect that is usually temporary. Bald patches are also common, as fifty to a hundred hairs can be lost each day. Other side effects include swelling of areas such as the scalp and forehead. If this becomes uncomfortable, medication may ease the swelling. Additionally, the patient must be careful if his scalp starts itching, as scratching will make it worse and cause scabs to form. A moisturizer or massage shampoo may be used in order to relieve the itching. Several years after the surgery, more hair loss can occur, with the transplanted patches staying in place. This results in odd patches of hair, unless they are removed, or unless more hair is transplanted.
How Long Does Hair Transplant Surgery Take? A hair transplant procedure can take anywhere from 8 – 14 hours depending upon the size of the number of grafts and the complexity of the transplant.
How Long Does it Take for Hair Transplants to Grow? For the average hair transplant patient, grafts will begin growing noticeably between 3 and 4 months post-op. The most significant growth will be seen between 6 and 8 months and growth will continue for up to one year post-op before you see the final results.
